Many ceramic materials are highly anisotropic, such that their properties are much higher in some grain directions. However, we are yet not utilizing this to the full potential in combination with the shape control 3D printing now allows for. With a Villum Young Investigator grant funded by VILLUM FONDEN, we will try to understand how to simultaneously optimize both shape and grain orientation of ceramics, with piezoelectric ceramics as the test case.
We are now looking for a PhD candidate to be a part of this new research group at DTU Energy, section for Functional Oxides. Your task will be to investigate how grain orientation is introduced during different ceramic 3D printing routes. This includes to synthesize ceramic oxide particles, study different ink formulations and their rheology, optimize the 3D printing procedure and understand how all these parameters affect the grain alignment in the printed piezoelectric ceramics.
You should have:
- A MSc degree (120 ECTS points) in chemistry, physics, materials science, engineering, or similar
- Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken
- The ability to work independently with a strong drive, to plan and carry out complicated tasks
- Interest in contributing positively to a new research group with a collaborative and diverse culture
- A creative mindset for solving problems and identify new directions and opportunities in your project.
We value (but do not require) experience with:
- 3D printing, CAD design, programming, finite element modelling
- Hands-on lab work with ceramic processing, wet chemistry, rheology
- Characterization of materials, especially ceramics.
Approval and Enrolment

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
