The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a three-year PhD position, starting 1 September 2022, for research on a project in online algorithms with predictions.
We are seeking excellent and highly motivated candidates with an MSc degree in computer science or in mathematics with computer science as a side topic. The MSc degree must be completed before 31 August 2022, so not necessarily before the application deadline. The ideal candidate has interest and experien ce in algorithms and proofs. Some experience with machine learning is an advantage, but not a requirement.
The project focus is on improving optimization algorithms in online decision-making. Using techniques from the field of online algorithms for solving optimization problems, we can provide worst-case guarantees, but normal (average-case) behaviour may not be satisfactory. Using techniques from machine learning, we can often provide good behaviour in practice, but guarantees are lacking; for example for situations not captured by the training data. We aim at combining the best features from these two areas.
The Online Algorithms group at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at SDU comprises two full professors, an associate professor, an assistant professor, and their students. The group is part of the Algorithms Section. The project is in cooperation with researchers from the IT University of Copenhagen and gives possibilities for visiting th ere and visiting research groups abroad.
The department has an international, diverse composition and the working language is English. The city of Odense offers many cultural activities, affordable housing, nature experiences, separate car-free bike routes, and a fast connection to Copenhagen Airport.
Deadline: 24 May 2022.
