This fully funded PhD student position is an opportunity to work in the Department of Biomedical Sciences in the lab of Associate Professor Thomas Jepps commencing Summer 2021.
Our group and research
The Jepps Vascular Biology Group has a long-standing interest in how arterial tone is regulated and the molecular mechanisms that contribute to vascular diseases, such as hypertension and atherosclerosis. Recently, the Jepps lab has been interested in the role of the microtubule network in smooth muscle cells of the arterial wall.
The aim of this project is to reveal the role of kinesin motor proteins in vascular smooth muscle by determining cargo proteins that are transported by these microtubule motors. The project will use a plethora of molecular biology techniques to determine proteins that are dependent on kinesin trafficking, followed by functional techniques to assess the physiological impact of these associations.
This position is intended for an ambitious and talented individual interested in applying their skills to the discipline of vascular physiology. Applicants should have prior knowledge and experience of working with either the microtubule network or within vascular physiology. This PhD will incorporate techniques such as, mass spectrometry, immunostaining with super-resolution microscopy, Western blotting, immunoprecipitations and quantitative PCR. Experience with any of these techniques should be emphasised. Additional desirable skills include experience working with rodents, arterial dissection and myography. You will be expected to work closely with other members of a growing team, therefore excellent communication skills are essential.
Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, an MSc within a relevant field of physiology, pharmacology or a related discipline.
You will be required to:
- Work with the principal supervisor to manage your own academic research and administrative activities;
- Be creative and contribute intellectually to the project, including generating new ideas and defining how you would test your theories in order to give new insights into the project;
- Adapt existing and develop new scientific techniques and experimental protocols;
- Collaborate in the preparation of scientific reports and journal articles;
- Represent the research group at external meetings/seminars, either with other members of the group or alone;
- Attend PhD courses to obtain the necessary ECTS points.
- Undertake a limited amount of teaching of undergraduate medical students, usually in the form of practical or tutorial exercises.

Your key tasks as a PhD student at SUND are:
- Carry through an independent research project under supervision
- Complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points
- Participate in active research environments including a stay at another research team
- Obtain experience with teaching or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project
- Teach and disseminate your knowledge
- Write a PhD thesis on the grounds of your project
Key criteria for the assessment of applicants
Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to a master’s degree related to the subject area of the project e.g. physiology
Other important criteria are:
- Genuine motivation to uncover novel physiological mechanisms in the field of vascular biology
- The grade point average achieved
- Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD project
- Relevant work experience
- Other professional activities
- Curious mind-set
The applicant should be comfortable speaking English at a high level, enabling them to confidently present at conferences and discuss complex scientific ideas without being restricted by language.

Terms of employment
The employment as PhD fellow is full time and for 3 years.
It is conditioned upon the applicant’s successful enrolment as a PhD student at the Graduate School at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant during an initial three-month employment as a research assistant.
The PhD study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD programme (2013) and the Faculty’s rules on achieving the degree.
Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the agree¬ment between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary begins around 27.568 DKK /approx. 3.707 EUR (February 2021-level) plus pension.

The further process
After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the hiring committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment by an unbiased assessor.
The assessor makes a non-prioritized assessment of the academic qualifications and experience with respect to the above-mentioned area of research, techniques, skills and other requirements listed in the advertisement.
Once the assessment work has been completed each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself.
