The Niels Bohr Institute invites applicants for a PhD fellowship in Theoretical Quantum Optics and Quantum Information.
Start date is (expected to be) May 1st 2022.
The project will be part of the center for Hybrid Quantum Networks, which aims at merging single photons sources with mechanical oscillators for long term quantum memories in quantum networks. The present project will investigate methods to exploit optomechanical systems for quantum information processing. Possible topics includes high speed quantum memories for photons, coupling of mechanical oscillators to spin systems, and architectures for quantum networks involving mechanical oscillators.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for candidates within the field of quantum physics or related areas. Applicants can have any background within quantum physics but it is a particular advantage to have experience in quantum optics, quantum information and/or optomechanics.
Our group and research- and what do we offer?
The PhD project will be part of the Theoretical Quantum Optics Group, which is headed by Professor Anders S. Sørensen and currently consists of two Post Docs, four Ph.D. students and five master students. The group focusses on the implementation of quantum information processors in various physical system, ranging from quantum optics to solid state systems. The group is part the Center for Hybrid Quantum Network and the Quantum Optics section, which consists of more that 50 researchers. The center and the section provides a very strong research environment with leading international research groups within quantum optics.

The PhD programme
A three year full-time study within the framework of the regular PhD programme (5+3 scheme).
Qualifications needed for the regular programme
To be eligible for the regular PhD programme, you must have completed a degree programme, equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (180 ECTS/3 FTE BSc + 120 ECTS/2 FTE MSc) related to the subject area of the project, e.g. physics. Terms of employment in the regular programme
Employment as PhD fellow is full time and for maximum 3 years.
Employment is conditional upon your successful enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD School at the Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant.
The terms of employment and salary are in accordance to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State (AC). The position is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.
Responsibilities and tasks
- Carry through an independent research project under supervision
- Complete PhD courses corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS / ½ FTE
- Participate in active research environments, including a stay at another research institution, preferably abroad
- Teaching and knowledge dissemination activities
- Write scientific papers aimed at high-impact journals
- Write and defend a PhD thesis on the basis of your project

- Curious mind-set with a strong interest in theoretical quantum optics and the implementation of quantum information processing
