We are offering a PhD fellowship entitled Minipig model of prosthetic joint infection commencing 1 December 2021 or as soon as possible hereafter.
Our group and research
The PhD Fellowship is located in the research group of Veterinary Pathology. The purpose of the research group is to improve human and animal health through comparative pathological studies. Focus is especially on infectious diseases, where spontaneous infections in, e.g. poultry, pigs and cattle are analysed together with infections in various experimental animal models. The research contributes to evidence based solutions of actual health challenges associated with especially bacterial, viral and fungal infections. In all studies, application of different in situ methods are applied in order to elucidate both simple and complex infection biology interactions with respect to the inflammatory response and the host-pathogen interaction.
Project description
The main task in the project will be the development, evaluation and application of a new porcine model for prosthetic joint infection (PJI) in humans. The model will be established in Ellegaard Göttingen Minipigs with insertion of customized hip or knee prosthesis. The model will be used for the study of infections and antibacterial surface coatings. The PhD student will perform surgeries, infection development monitoring and post-mortem characterization including histopathology.
