One or more PhD Stipends in Air Interface Methods for 6G Systems (8-22101)

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, one or more PhD stipends in Air Interface Methods for 6G Systems are available within the general study programme Wireless Communications. The stipends are open for appointment from 1 January, 2023, or soon as possible thereafter. In electronics engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the societal relevance of its research programmes. The Department of Electronic Systems consists of more than 200 employees, of which about 40 % are international and about 90 are enrolled PhD students. The Department hosts 620 students. The Department's excellent research infrastructures and facilities accentuate its global position in teaching and research. The Department's research centres around communication, antennas, control systems, AI, sound, cybersecurity and robotics. The Department plays an active role in translating discoveries and results into practical applications with industrial partners and IPR. The Department provides teaching for several BSc and MSc programmes using a problem- and project-based learning model.

Job description

With the deployment and commercialization of 5G networks well underway, researchers from academic institutions and the wireless industry are increasingly turning their attention to the design of the next generation of mobile networks. The 6th generation (6G) will take the form of a “network of networks” and enable a set of novel exciting applications, such as multisensory extended reality applications towards the metaverse, connected robotics and autonomous systems, or massive application of digital twins. For these applications to become a reality, a set of key enabling technologies needs to be developed in the current decade, including the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques for radio interface optimization, the design of transceivers and their associated air interface in sub-THz and THz frequency bands, novel communication protocols tailored to support extreme communication requirements, and the development of highly accurate positioning and radio imaging solutions.

To boost research and ensure European leadership in the in the development, deployment, and adoption of 6G technologies, the European Commission (EC) launched in 2021 the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS-JU). The SNS-JU is a partnership between EC and Industry that aims to invest at least €1.8 billion in an R&I program in the timeframe 2021—2027, in the form of competitive grants for cooperative academic-industrial research projects. Phase 1 of the program is expected to start early 2023, and Aalborg University will participate in multiple of the granted projects.

Within the above context, the Wireless Communication Networks (WCN) at the Department of Electronic Systems is looking for highly qualified and skilled phd researchers to participate in the projects. Through their participation in the projects, the selected candidates will have a chance to interact and cooperate with some of the best renowned institutions and researchers from the European academic and industrial wireless landscape, as well as contribute to the design of the wireless networks of the future.

The sought candidates should be able to demonstrate knowledge and some research experience in one or more of the following areas:

  •  The physical layer and air interface of modern communication systems (e.g., 5G), as well as signal processing methods for algorithmic design.
  • ML and AI techniques and their application to relevant problems in wireless networks.
  • Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications, including millimeter-wave communications.
  • Medium access control and modern channel access techniques, in both licensed and unlicensed spectra
  • Radio resource management and dynamic spectrum sharing policies

A solid mathematical background and experience in scientific computing programming (MATLAB, Python, C/C++) are also a prerequisite. In addition, they should be able to conduct research and dissemination at a good international level, have excellent scientific communication skills, and strong teamwork competences.
You may obtain further professional information from Associate Professor Carles Navarro Manchón [email protected];  Associate Professor Gilberto Berardinelli, email [email protected];  or Associate Professor Ramoni Adeogun, email [email protected] , concerning the scientific aspects.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
For further information about stipends and salary as well as practical issues concerning the application procedure contact Ms. Lisbeth Diinhoff , The Doctoral School at The Technical Faculty of IT and Design, email: [email protected] , phone: +45 9940 9589.
