At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, one ore more PhD stipends in Acoustistic Signal Processing for Minimizing Listening Effort using Brain Feedback are available within the general study programme Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The stipends are open for appointment from February 1st, 2020, or soon as possible thereafter.
One of the most common complaints among hearing aids users is the mental fatigue they undergo after relatively short conversations in noisy situations due to increased levels of listening effort. The overall goal of this research project is to develop a new concept of hearing assistive devices that continuously monitor the brain, and adapts the signal processing in the hearing assistive devices in order to minimize the listening effort. The project combines signal processing and auditory neuroscience and include theoretical and experimental research:
- Acoustically controlled experiments with portable EEG devices in anechoic chambers where real-life acoustic environments can be simulated using arrays of loudspeakers.
- Signal processing algorithms for extracting correlates of listening effort from EEG, and speech enhancement algorithms that minimize the listening effort.
The project is a collaboration between the Department of Electronic Systems and the Department of Health, Science and Technology, at Aalborg University, and there will be collaboration with international universities and industry.
The project is fully funded by The Independent Research Fund Denmark under the project entitled “Effortless Hearing in Noise by Brain Feedback”.
The successful applicant must have a Master degree in Statistical Signal Processing, Information Theory, Estimation Theory, Auditory Processing, or EEG Signal Processing, and have extensive knowledge in one or more of the disciplines. Excellent undergraduate and master degree grades are desired. A high level of written and spoken English is also expected.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT adn Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.
The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
