Declaration of interest regarding PhD project:

Neurobiology Research, Department of Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences at SDU is looking for applicants for a PhD scholarship within the field of neuroimmunology/neurobiology.
We are looking for a person with a master’s degree in neuroscience, biomedicine/human biology, molecular biology or in medicine.

Research environment

You will be the principal person coordinating the activities between the project partners at Department of Molecular Medicine, University of Southern Denmark (SDU), Department of Health Science and Technology, Aalborg University (AAU), and the Department of Nuclear Medicine & PET-Centre, Aarhus University Hospital. You will be based at the SDU but will for periods work on the transgenic rat colony at AAU. You will be in an environment with other PhD students.

 Project description

This PhD project is an integrated part of the interdisciplinary collaborative project entitled ‘Development of new diagnostic tools and therapies in Alzheimer's disease’. With new pharmacological approaches, we aim to slow down detrimental neuroimmune responses, with the aim to ameliorate neuropathology and preserve cognitive abilities in Alzheimer's disease. The animal experimental part of the project will make use a well-characterized transgenic rat model for Alzheimer's disease.  Treatment effects will be assessed by behavioral testing, neuroimaging, evaluation of blood and CSF biomarkers, and by neuropathological/microscopic, immunological, molecular, and biochemical analysis of the brains. Molecular techniques, such as RNASeq, will be applied pending the question. The aim is to obtain mechanistic understanding.

Qualifications

A successful candidate should have a master’s degree in neuroscience, biomedicine/human biology, molecular biology or in medicine, and knowledge of neuroanatomy/neurobiology. Knowledge in immunology is also required. The candidate should preferentially have experience in rodent animal research, tissue collection, and standard histology and molecular techniques. Knowledge of flow cytometry is an advantage. The student should be able to integrate and work together with the rest of the team. A candidate who is already an author or co-author on a scientific paper will be preferred.

 Qualifications: Essential
