Ph.D. position (Structured Graphical Models for Causal Inference)

Updated: about 1 year ago
Deadline: 2023-05-31T00:00:00Z
Structured Graphical Models for Causal Inference is increasinglyan important class of Machine Learning techniques, especially inapplications of public health and medicine. Using careful well-principledstructure in the modeling, conclusions can be reached regarding thecause-effect, rather than simply correlational influence, with farreaching implications for understanding and treatment/policy.

The development, analysis, training, and inference of these models arehighly nontrivial and involve an array of tools from statisticsand information theory along with optimization and numericalanalysis. As part of a Horizon Europe EU-wide project, we areseeking motivated and competent Ph.D. students to pursue research inthe associated fields.

As part of this position, we seek a Ph.D. student with a background incomputer science, statistics, and/or applied mathematics to work onprobabilistic graphical models subject to potentially time-varyingtrends and exhibiting potential for causal inference. The projectwill involve developing new models, proving statistical propertiesthereof, developing techniques to adequately train them with strongaccuracy and generalization, and testing them on real biomedical andpublic health data.

The Ph.D. student will be supervised jointly by Vyacheslav Kunurtsevand Ondrej Kuzelka at the Czech Technical University in Prague, theDepartment of Computer Science.A preference is given to candidates with experience in programming, especially (but not limited to) PythonCzech Technical University (CTU) is the oldest non-military technical university in Europe. In the academic year 2020/21, CTU offered 130-degree programs in Czech and 84 in English. CSRankings.org currently ranks the Department of Computer Science at number 6 in Europe within AI and Computer Vision, after Technion, ETH Zurich, Imperial, Max Planck Society, and EPFL. The Czech capital regularly ranks among five European cities among the world's best cities in the world to live in (cf. Time Out Magazine index for 2021) and CTU’s offices are in a centrally-located palace with a view of Prague Castle. For more information, please see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PragueWe expect to start interviewing candidates as soon as possible, witha view of a start between January and September 2023.
