Institutions/locations: Center of Excellence for Science and Technology - Integration of Mediterranean Region (STIM) connects research, innovation and education and aims to develop advanced technology at nanoscale for medical diagnostics ( ). Research will be performed mostly at the Mediterranean Institute for Life Sciences (MedILS; ) - a private, international, independent, non-profit institution focused on aging in Split, Croatia, with shorter periods spent at the Goettingen University Medical Center in Germany.

Split is a beautiful mid-size city at the Adriatic coast in Dalmatia, located in the vicinity of several mountains and islands. It hosts famous Diocletian Palace and other antiquities from Roman, Byzantine and Venetian historical periods, as well as the Marjan peninsula and a number of beaches. MedILS is situated in a quiet area by the sea in the Marjan forest, at a walking distance from the city center.

The team: Successful candidate will be a part of the “Biology of Robustness” group at MedILS ( ) and will work under guidance of Dr. Katarina Trajkovic from MedILS and Dr. Anita Krisko from the Experimental Neurodegeneration Department in Goettingen ( ).

Project description: The project “Application of new nanostructured materials in medical diagnostics” entails studying of oxidative damage to proteins in different metabolic states, and of the mechanisms of cell death induced by age-related protein carbonylation. The project will be focused on elucidating the lysosomal proteome and carbonylome in prolongevity cellular programs, as well as in lysosomal storage diseases. Strategies for detection and analysis of protein carbonylation using new nanostructured materials will be developed.

Requirements: Ideal candidate is an ambitious, self-motivated and team-oriented scientist with background in molecular biology or biochemistry and substantial laboratory experience. Candidates must be able to independently design and perform experiments, analyse and interpret data, solve problems and write manuscripts. At least one first-author publication in a high-impact international journal is required to demonstrate productivity. Excellent written and spoken English and good writing skills are essential. Prior international experience is a plus.
