Contest point 12 - Doctoral student

Updated: over 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 29 Oct 2021

Doctoral student (Assistant) in the Division for Marine and Environmental Research, Laboratory for radioecology (Ruder Boskovic Institute). The PhD student will be associated with the Croatian Science Foundation (CSF) project “Radionuclides in children food and novel methods for low level activity determination” (RiChFALL). The aim of the RiChFALL project is to improve the existing and develop fast and reliable methods for determining alpha, beta and gamma emitters, and to conduct a comprehensive analysis of radioactivity in commercially available children food and to determine the ingestion dose for certain age groups of children. Within the project, the main goal of the proposed doctoral thesis is to improve the existing measurement method of gamma-spectrometric determinations by introducing and building a dedicated active shield of plastic scintillators for the existing high-purity germanium detectors (HPGe). The existing method would thus become applicable for the measurement of very low activities. The doctoral student would apply the developed method for the determination of radioactivity in children's food mostly used in Croatia, in which low activities of certain radionuclides are expected.

The PhD candidate will be expected to enroll in a doctoral study program in Physics at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb. The successful candidate should have an experience in the field of physics.
