Fully funded PhD at Tsinghua University, Shenzhen, China


Multiple  PhD positions are open at Tsinghua University (2023 QS world rank 14, 2023 US News world rank 23) to investigate gas hydrate foundation and application, including natural gas hydrate exploitation technology, hydrate and flow assurance (hydrate plugging and inhibition in oil-water transportation pipeline), gas storage technology based on hydrate (natural gas, CO2 or hydrogen). The research will take place at Tsinghua University’s Shenzhen International Graduate School (SIGS), located in Shenzhen, China, and is partly sponsored by NSFC, Great Bay Area regional funds, and Tsinghua SIGS’s scientific research funds.


Successful applicants will join a team managed by Dr. Mucong Zi, Assistant Professor in the Institute for Ocean Engineering, SIGS, Tsinghua University. Candidates are expected to have background on chemical engineering, environmental engineering, and material engineering. Candidates will be preferred with the research experience in gas hydrate, organic material synthesis, oil-gas transportation, gas storage, and molecular dynamic simulation. The positions are open to any citizenship and all qualified applicants are welcome.


The PhD program is four years (for candidates with a master’s degree) or five years (for candidates with a Bachelor’s degree) in duration. The upcoming starting time is Sep 2023. Successful PhD candidate will be awarded with doctor’s degree in Environmental Science Engineering, Tsinghua University. 


You should have a degree in related areas. A range of scholarship opportunities are available (see links below for details) and monthly living allowance will be provided by the PI. Chinese is NOT required if you are fluent in English. 


PI INFORMATION

Dr. Mucong Zi is an Assistant Professor in Shenzhen International Graduate School, Tsinghua University, where he has been since December 2021. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Environmental Engineering from Wuhan University in 2014. He received his Ph.D. degree in the Environmental Science and Engineering, Tsinghua University in 2019 (Supervisor: Prof. Daoyi Chen). He then worked at Colorado School of Mines (USA) as a postdoctoral fellow from June 2019 to June 2021. His research interests mainly include exploitation of natural gas hydrate resources, novel application based on gas hydrate (gas storage, sewage disposal, carbon sequestration, etc.), and deep-sea oil-gas transportation flow assurance. Mucong Zi has published 13 peer-reviewed research papers.
