A $3,850 prize has been made available through an endowment established by Dr. Rashid Sumaila upon being named the 2017 Volvo Environment Prize laureate for a Master’s or Ph.D. student whose peer-reviewed publications to date are expected to have the most significant impact on the field of environmental sustainability.
Eligibility
- Nominees must have been registered in a UBC-Vancouver Master’s or PhD program in the 2021W session
- Preference is given to students supervised by faculty members who are affiliated with the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries ; the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability ; or the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs . Students who are not supervised by faculty members affiliated with these units will be considered only if there is no nomination received from these units.
Evaluation Criteria
The recipient will be the student whose peer-reviewed publications to date are expected to have the most significant impact on the field of environmental sustainability.
Application Procedures
- Students who wish to be considered for the prize are to submit the following to their graduate program:
- Annotated list of peer-reviewed publications - maximum two pages
- The list must include the student’s name and UBC student number
- The list must use the following format:
- Full authorship as it appears/will appear in the original publication (with the applicant's name in bold)
- Year
- Title
- Publication name and volume
- First and last page numbers
- For co-authored publications, a description of the nominee’s role / contribution to the publication
- Brief summary of the publication’s content and significance for the field of environmental sustainability
- Each entry must clearly indicate whether the publication has been submitted, accepted or is in press
- Feel free to include hyperlinks in your text, to refer adjudicators to online publications for supplemental information. Such additional information may be reviewed by adjudicators.
- Nomination letter from nominee’s supervisor or designate - maximum two pages
- The nomination letter must clearly outline how and why the nominee’s peer-reviewed publications to date are expected to have a significant impact on the field of environmental sustainability
- Annotated list of peer-reviewed publications - maximum two pages
Presentation standards:
- Pages must be 8½” x 11” (216mm x 279mm); margins must be set at a minimum of ¾” (1.87 cm)
- Use a font that will be easily readable by adjudicators, e.g., 12-point Times New Roman, or equivalent
- No condensed type or spacing (single- or double-spaced are acceptable)
- Please include section titles as appropriate
Nomination Procedures
Each graduate program may submit up to three nominees to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Please submit your nomination materials via your department’s UBC Sharepoint folder (within the umbrella folder ‘Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies – Programs – Folder Structure”)(named “FACULTY – DEPT“; e.g., “ARTS – PSYC”).
Adjudication Procedures
The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies will convene an adjudication committee comprising faculty members from relevant disciplines to select the recipient of the prize.
