Your Challenge


Help bring research to life and drive your career forward with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Canada's largest research and technology organization.
 
We are looking for a Sofware Engineer to support our Energy, Mining and Environment Research Centre. The Research Officer would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.


The individual in this position will be responsible for all aspects of software engineering on the Systems and Prototypes Integration team. Most of the work will consist of designing, programming, testing, deploying and documenting applications for peripheral monitoring & instrumentation (sensor, video capture board, laser, spectrometer, actuator, etc.), data acquisition and processing, as well as posting the results. User interface programming in accordance with good practices (User experience – UX) is also part of the mandate.


Some of your challenges will be to:
•    Program monitoring software for instruments and analysis of results for optical and ultrasound measurement applications;
•    Perform design, version control and unit test reviews; 
•    Write scripts for automating existing processes to increase resource effectiveness;
•    Reshape existing instrumentation and analysis platforms to enhance robustness or fulfill new requirements;
•    Integrate third-party development kits (SDK or API) for monitoring scientific peripherals;
•    Manage a version and environment monitoring server for the various languages.


The applicant will work as part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers, engineers and specialists in world-class unique facilities in the design and creation of complex scientific instrument prototypes.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering with speciality or other related discipline.

Experience


•    Experience as a full-stack developer;
•    Experience in object-oriented programming with a modern language;
•    Practical experience in the design of architecture and complex instrumentation, and peripheral monitoring software;
•    Considerable experience in standard software design patterns, simulation and unit tests;
•    Considerable experience in debugging and problem solving.

Technical Competencies


•    Proficiency in a modern IDE with their debugging and profiling tools, etc. (Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code, Eclipse, etc.);
•    Clear knowledge of C# programming language (Full-Stack, .Net and WPF framework);
•    Knowledge of C, C++ and Python programming language (scripting and scientific ecosystem an asset);
•    Familiarity with the use and writing of DLL;
•    IT knowledge (Windows server, Sysadmin, Windows IOT, networking, virtual machines);
•    Basic knowledge of Agile, unified modelling language (UML) and the rudiments of user experience (UX).

Compensation


The intent of this hiring action is to staff this position at the RCO-2 level, which is an early-career level position with a salary range of $74,230 to $103,093. 
 
NOTE: Please note that the full RO/RCO salary scale has five levels. Salary determination will be based on a review of the candidate’s expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level.  As such, the initial salary could be within another level of the RO/RCO salary scale (i.e. above or below the intended level for this position).
