Post-doctoral Fellowship in Machine Learning for Detecting Heart Disease

Updated: almost 2 years ago
Location: Vancouver UBC, BRITISH COLUMBIA
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

A post-doctoral position is available for a PhD graduate (imminent or recent) to join a highly interdisciplinary team of scientists and clinicians at the UBC School of Biomedical Engineering and Vancouver General Hospital. The successful candidate will be welcomed into a dynamic and stimulating research environment, where they will lead a highly visible project in data science and cardiac health. The position is well-suited for those pursuing a research career in applied machine learning in academic or industry, and are looking for an opportunity to establish themselves as an early career leader in artificial intelligence and health care.

The research will focus on the development and application of machine learning methods for the analysis of multi-modal data, including electronic medical records, electrocardiograms, and cine magnetic resonance images (MRIs) of the heart. The technical outcomes of the project have the potential to make a large positive impact on the practice of cardiology and care of patients with heart disease. While the project is an academic initiative, it offers an opportunity to collaborate with a highly interested industry partner.

Eligibility: Individuals with enthusiasm for applied machine learning, with a recent (within 5 years) PhD in computer science, biomedical/computer engineering, or related field, excellent academic credentials, and publications in high impact conferences and journals are encouraged to apply. Demonstrated familiarity with a range of machine learning methods, including ensemble learning methods such as random forests and feature learning methods such as neural networks, and expertise in the application of such methods to image analysis are required. Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team, and strong verbal and written communication skills are essential. Experience with biomedical data and health applications is preferred. UBC hires on the basis of merit and is committed to employment equity. We encourage all qualified persons to apply. However, all else being equal, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.
