The NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships – Doctoral (PGS-D) program provides financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in an eligible doctoral program in the natural sciences or engineering. This support allows these scholars to fully concentrate on their studies and seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields.

Applications to the PGS D program will automatically be considered for the Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship – Doctoral (CGS D) award , which is offered to the top-ranked applicants; the next tier of meritorious applicants will be offered a PGS D award.

Fall 2022 competition deadlines:

  • Application deadline (through The University of British Columbia): Tuesday, 12 September 2023 at 12:00 pm PT
  • Graduate program nomination deadline (to Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies): Tuesday, 10 October 2023 at 4:00 pm PT

Late applications will not be accepted.

Eligibility

Complete eligibility criteria are available on the CGS-D program page  (the NSERC PGS D shares eligibility criteria with the CGS D).

However, this additional eligibility criteria is specific to the NSERC PGSD:

  • Applicants may take up their PGS D at any eligible Canadian institution. They may also take it up at any eligible foreign institution, provided they have received a previous degree from a Canadian institution.
  • If an applicant is offered a CGS D but decides to take the award to an eligible foreign institution, and is eligible to do so, they must decline the CGS D to be offered a PGS D award in its place.

Refer to the NSERC PGSD program page for details.
