Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

Dr. Alex Lohman’s Lab at the University of Calgary and Hotchkiss Brain Institute is actively recruiting a Master’s or PhD level graduate student to study microglia remodelling in adolescent brain injury. The Lohman Lab uses pre-clinical rodent models of repetitive, mild traumatic brain injuries (RmTBI) to investigate the acute impact of these injuries on the maturing adolescent brain and chronic implications on neurological health with a focus on neurodegeneration. The recruited student will work as part of a collaborative team to understand how unique microglia phenotypes that present following adolescent RmTBI affect synaptic structure, neuronal communication and circuit function as it relates to neurobehavioral deficits, and will determine the efficacy of therapeutically targeting identified axes in microglia signalling networks to improve functional outcomes. The lab utilizes flow cytometry, high resolution confocal imaging, in vivo multiphoton cranial window imaging, behavioural paradigms and molecular and biochemical assays to dissect signalling mechanisms controlling neuroinflammatory responses to injury. Interested candidates should have a background in general neuroscience and cell biology. Prior training and laboratory experience in areas of neurobiology, neuroimmunology or brain injury is preferred.
