The SNOLAB group at Carleton University has an immediate opening for an Installation Supervisor to oversee detector construction activities for the DEAP-3600 project at SNOLAB in Lively Ontario. DEAP-3600 is a large particle astrophysics experiment using cryogenic liquid argon to search for dark matter particles and is currently being upgraded. Reporting to the Principal Investigator at Carleton, the Installation Supervisor will have responsibility for overseeing upgrades to the DEAP 3600 experiment and management of on-site personnel.

The successful candidate will be employed by Carleton University and will be based at the SNOLAB facility in Sudbury (www.snolab.ca). The position is for one year with possibility of renewal depending on project schedule and needs.

Please note that this a Full-time, Temporary position in Sudbury, ON. The incumbent will work Mondays - Thursdays, 10 hours/day.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities include:
• Coordinating the installation of the DEAP experiment hardware in conjunction with the project management team, scientific personnel, and technical staff.
• Supervision of on-site project staff ensuring that all tasks are carried out safely, efficiently and to completion. This includes overseeing training, scheduling and performance evaluations. Coordinate work activities, delegate work and ensure work plans have been appropriately reviewed and approved for execution underground; delegate tasks as required. Resolve conflicting work priorities and provide guidance and support to staff.
• Troubleshoot equipment by either solving problems or making recommendations on next steps. Work with project support staff to ensure materials are transported underground to the experimental area when required.
• Provide training opportunities to ensure staff have opportunities to develop skills for improvement on the job.
• Compose reports and briefings with regards to the operations of the DEAP-3600 experiment.


Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
• Supervisory and leadership skills to provide direction and instruction to technical staff.
• Relevant experience working with large equipment. Proficiency with hoisting, machining, piping and vacuum systems will be considered assets.
• Strong mechanical aptitude, experience working with instruments and scientific equipment.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to understand and solve problems encountered in design and development.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to schedule installation activities underground.
• Ability to make decisions about installation and layout of piping and other systems in conjunction with the engineering and project management team.

Important Note Regarding Pandemic Related Operations:

This position is required to work on campus. Exceptionally, since March 2020, many staff and faculty at Carleton University have been working from home in order to comply with public health requirements while continuing to provide services to support the operational functioning of the university. We are currently in the process of identifying positions that need to work on campus as part of our return to campus process. This position may be required to work temporarily remotely due to public health requirements or it may have been identified as one of the roles that are required to work on campus. If this position is required to work on campus, the successful candidate will be informed of the health and safety measures that are in place to ensure their safety on campus. If there is a requirement to work remotely (it is possible that there could be a requirement to work both remotely and on campus), the successful candidate will work with the manager to set up a remote work environment including discussing appropriate technology and requirements. Please note that once public health requirements permit, Carleton University will resume normal on campus operations and at that point there will be a timely notification provided by the manager and the requirement to working full time physically onsite will resume. Therefore, we are looking for candidates currently in or looking to relocate to the Ottawa area.
