The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Doctoral Research Awards provide special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field. Two types of awards are available. Please be advised that an applicant can only apply to one competition in the same year:

  • Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarship Doctoral Awards  (CGS-D) for students pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field in Canada
    • UBC application deadline: 12 September 2023 at 12:00 pm PT
  • Doctoral Foreign Study Award  (DFSA) for students pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field abroad (outside Canada)
    • CIHR application deadline: 17 October 2023 (apply directly to CIHR)

Late applications will not be accepted.

Please note that if successful, an applicant cannot change the proposed location or institution paid from a Canadian institution (CGSD application) to a foreign institution (DFSA application) since the purpose of these competitions are different.

Note: CIHR CGSD winners will receive a $35,000/year offer.  Prior to 2023, CIHR CGSD recipients received a $30,000/year stipend offer + $5,000/year research allowance.
