We are looking for an Instrumentation Technologist, Robotized Manufacturing and Aerial Robotics Projects, Aerospace Manufacturing Technologies Centre (AMTC) to support our Aerospace Research Centre. The Instrumentation Technologist, AMTC’s Robotized Manufacturing and Aerial Robotics Projects, would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

 

Working as an Instrumentation Technologist, you will provide Facility support for research and technology development projects within AMTC’s Automation, Robotics & Intelligent Manufacturing Systems team. You will design and assemble control cabinets for mechatronic prototypes. You will fabricate and install electric, electronic and occasionally pneumatic systems required for the team’s projects, and will be required to: design, manufacture, integrate and commission instrumentation systems and control cabinets, purchase components, perform instrument calibrations, maintain and troubleshoot the team’s research facilities and control systems and participate in supporting the experimental and operational testing needs of the team. You will be expected to maintain knowledge of current instrumentation system technology and instrumentation trends, including Fieldbus communication technologies, sensor installation methodology, cabling and wiring and maintenance best practices.

Education

Diploma from a three-year post-secondary Engineering Technology program or an Applied Science Technology program in electronics or in instrumentation.

Experience
  • Significant experience carrying out a wide range of complex work such as designing, installing, maintaining, configuring, programming and operating modern electrics/electronics instrumentation, sensors, data acquisition systems and motion control systems, including associated wiring and fabrication of cable harnesses;
  • Significant experience in the design and assembly of control cabinets;
  • Significant experience in supporting the electromechanical integration and instrumentation of technology prototypes, as well as their calibration and experimental and operational testing; and
  • Significant experience in working in multidisciplinary technical teams for the execution of industrial instrumentation projects.

Must be able to possess and retain the physical capabilities to perform the position which include but may not be limited to: crouching, bending, twisting, walking, climbing stairs & ladders, ability to hear to diagnose mechanical troubles, and the ability to handle heavy and bulky objects.

Assessment Criteria

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:


Technical Competencies
  • Solid knowledge in designing (using electric drawing software), selecting components for, assembling and configuring electric/electronic cabinets;
  • Solid knowledge of wired computer networking technologies (Ethernet, LAN) and Fieldbus communication technologies  such as ProfiBus, EtherCAT, etc;
  • Knowledge of power electrics;
  • Knowledge in programming programmable logic controllers (PLCs); 
  • Basic knowledge in industrial pneumatics;
  • Advanced skills in handling (using overhead crane and forklift), anchoring heavy equipment and instrumentation on robotic arms (overhead); and
  • Knowledge of safety techniques and methods used in industrial facilities.
     

Assets:

  • Knowledge in LabView programming and Data Acquisition systems implementation, maintenance and upgrading;
  • Knowledge of programming of microcontrollers such as Arduino or single-board computers such as Raspberry Pi;
  • Knowledge of basic programming and operation of industrial robots; 
  • Knowledge of the CAN/CSA-Z434 Canadian safety standard for Industrial robots and robot systems; and
  • Basic knowledge in mechanical design.

Relocation

Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with the NRC's directives.


Compensation

From $73,744 to $94,839 per annum. In addition, the incumbent will receive the Bilingualism Bonus of $800 per year.
