Post-doctoral Fellowship in Chemistry and Agronomy

Two post-doctoral researcher positions with FAPESP (São Paulo Research Foundation) scholarship are open within the scope of FAPESP Thematic Project “The Biorational Control of Pest-Insect and Phytopathogens” (Grant number 2014 / 50918-7), coordinated by Professor Maria Fátima das Graças Fernandes da Silva. Deadline for application is 30 May, 2019.

One post-doctoral researcher will carry out activities with the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) group from the Chemistry Department at the Federal University of São Carlos (São Paulo State, Brazil), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Antonio Gilberto Ferreira. The other post-doctoral researcher will carry out activities in the biological control, mainly using Saprobic fungi, which have shown potential for disease control, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Sérgio Florentino Pascholati, at University of São Paulo’s Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture – ESALQ-USP in Piracicaba, São Paulo State, Brazil.

The scholarships will last 24 months, renewable for up to 24 months, depending on the performance of the scholarship holder, who will be evaluated annually in accordance with FAPESP regulations. The selected candidates will receive a FAPESP post-doctoral scholarship of R$ 7,373.10 per month each. The Technical Reserve is also expected to be equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the scholarship, which is intended to cover unforeseen expenses directly related to the research activity. If the post-doctoral scholarship holder resides at a different address and needs to move to the city where the research institution is located, he/she may be entitled to relocation assistance.

Candidates must have completed their PhD less than 7 (seven) years ago. The other requisites needed for the application required by FAPESP may be consulted at http://www.fapesp.br/en/postdoc . 

Candidate’s obligations

a) The candidate must devote exclusively to the research project (except by authorization of FAPESP, under the conditions set forth in the post-doctoral Decree nº 05/2012);

b) The candidate must not receive a scholarship from another entity, salary or remuneration derived from exercising activities of any nature (except by authorization of FAPESP, under the conditions set forth in Postdoctoral Decree nº 05/2012);

c) The candidate must submit scientific reports and application reports of technical reserve resources within the deadlines set forth in the Agreement, accompanied by the requested documentation;

Important: Failure to comply with these regulations and other obligations described at http://www.fapesp.br/en/postdoc  will result in cancellation of the scholarship and repayment of payments already made by FAPESP, at restated amounts. 

Specific activities for each candidate: 

• NMR scholarship holder

The scholarship holder will develop protocol analysis involving Plants Metabolomics using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Chemometrics as main techniques. Therefore, it is imperative that candidates have the following requirements: i) knowledge and ability to obtain spectroscopic measurements via NMR (1D and 2D) in solution for metabolomic and structural elucidation purposes; ii) know how to perform structural elucidation of low molar mass molecules (secondary metabolites) using NMR spectroscopic measurements and specific databases; iii)chemometric treatment of data involving PCA, PLS-DA, etc., and iv) knowledge and practice in developing HPLC chromatographic conditions for optimization of conditions for use of hyphenated LC-DAD-SPE/NMR technique. 

• Biological control, scholarship holder

The economic importance of the soybean in Brazil has resulted in a resistant varieties selection research program and in the use of biological control, mainly using Saprobic fungi, which have shown potential for disease control. Thus, the scholarship holder will develop protocol for analysis involving Saprobic fungi, in order to determine if secondary metabolites present in the extracts explain its potential for control of the phytopathogenic soybean fungus, as in “Asian Soybean Rust”. Therefore, it is imperative that candidates have the following requirements: i) knowledge in biology and fungal chemistry; ii) knowledge in fungal growth techniques; and iii) spectrometric identification of natural products.
