The Process Engineering for Sustainable Systems (ProcESS) is a vibrant research group dedicated to contribute to sustainable chemical processing by developing intensified and integrated flow sheets using continuous reactors and separators with alternative energy forms. ProcESS is world-known reference group on process intensification in the chemical industry. As a PhD student you will join a group of ca. 50 PhD students, many of them working on topics which are related to your research (crystallisation, polymerisation, ultrasound, flow chemistry, computational fluid dynamics modelling).

Project

The three PhD positions are part of a Horizon Europe project that will start in October 2022, named SIMPLI-DEMO. In this project, European industrial companies, research institutes and universities collaborate to advance in energy- and materials-efficient chemical processes for the production of solid particles (zeolites and pharmaceutical precursors) and of polymers (polyurethanes, polyethers). Flow processes and alternative energy forms (ultrasound and microwaves) form the tools to make this processes modular and flexible. KU Leuven coordinates the project and focuses its research on the use of ultrasound. There are three positions available in Leuven:

1) PhD position on the use of ultrasound in a continuous oscillatory baffle flow reactor for the crystallisation of zeolites and pharmaceutical precursors (emphasis on experimental work supported by modelling)

2) PhD position on the use of ultrasound in a continuous extruder for the synthesis of polyurethanes and polyethers (emphasis on experimental work supported by modelling)

3) PhD position on computational fluid dynamics of flow reactors (oscillatory baffle flow crystallizers and extruders) that are irradiated with ultrasound (emphasis on modelling supported by experimental work)
