We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team developping ultralow energy ion implantation setups. You will be part of the Quantum Solid State Physics section of the department of Physics and Astronomy of the KU Leuven. You will join several other postdoctoral researchers, PhD students and staff carrying out experimental research on ion beam techniques and condensed matter physics. You will have access to a wide range of in-house experimental facilities (https://fys.kuleuven.be/qsp/facilities/home), international large-scale facilities (e.g. the ISOLDE facility at CERN), and a network of leading international ion beam institutes.

Responsibilities

Your project will consist of developing novel setups dedicated to ultralow energy (ULE) ion implantation, operating in the ion energy range of the order of 10-200 eV. We are developping the ULE implantation techinque for applications in the field of modification of surfaces and 2D materials (related to e.g. https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsnano.1c00139  and  https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.nanolett.1c02470). Your work will deal specifically with the development,  implementation and optimization of new ULE implantation setups.

  • You will be introduced to the ongoing research.
  • You will contribute with your own expertise and will receive additional training.
  • You will carry out research at the highest international standards.
  • You will contribute to the supervision of PhD and MSc students and other training tasks.
  • You will contribute to the development of new projects.
  • You will be coached into developing your own independent research.

Profile
  • You hold a PhD in Physics or Engineering.
  • You are experienced with ion sources and ion-beam optics (design, simulation, implementation, testing), particularly in the low-energy regime (tens of eV to keV).
  • Experience with SIMION or related simulation software is advantageous.
  • Experience with the following fields/techniques is advantageous: ultra-high vacuum technology, surface science and technology, ion implantation.
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language (spoken and written).
  • Resourceful, ambitious and internationally oriented.
  • Capability to work in a team as well as independently, problem-solving attitude.

Offer

We offer a full-time postdoctoral research position, for one year, extendable to 3 years.
