The Lab of endometrium, endometriosis & Reproductive Medicine (LEERM) at the KU Leuven is a dynamic international team that has a focus on different aspects of human reproduction. The research activities cover fundamental as well as clinical processes in reproduction and reproductive disorders. The overall goal is to contribute to a better understanding of the molecular basis of the reproduction process and to achieve novel insights that could improve pregnancy outcomes

Project

LEERM offers an open position for a PhD candidate in an ongoing project on early implantation events.

Endometrial receptivity, culminating during the implantation window, is imperative for successful implantation as failure to do so results in infertility. Embryo implantation and the establishment of feto-maternal crosstalk requires the interaction of many cell types and processes that are orchestrated by a myriad of growth factors and hormones. Epithelial cells will interpret and respond to signals received from the implanting blastocyst in order to accommodate its implantation. In this research project we aim to unravel the underlaying mechanism in the crosstalk between the embryo and the uterus. Very specific research question will be studied:

  • What kind of signals are released by the blastocyst?
  • What are the uterine sensors for the detection of embryonic signals?
  • What are the uterine consequences after detection of these embryonic signals?
  • Can we apply this gathered knowledge in human to further improve the IVF process in human?

Profiel
  • You have an excellent study record and are prepared to apply for a personal fellowship
  • You have a Master degree in Biomedical Sciences, Medicine, Biology, Bio-engineering, Biomedical engineering or equivalent.
  • You have a high interest in reproductive Biology and a background in ion channels.
  • You have expertise in molecular biology research techniques and cell culture.
  • You are a team player and will be closely collaborating in a multidisciplinary team composed of PIs,postdocs, PhD students and lab technicians.
  • You have excellent written and oral communication skills.

Aanbod
  • Working with us: The lab has international expertise within the field of endometrial receptivity and embryo implantation. We have on site access to state-of-the-art facilities, and animal models including calcium imaging, patch clamp set ups, automated techniques in histology and others.
  • We offer a 4-year position on a competitive salary.
  • Start of he position is October 1st, 2021, but we are very happy to cater this for the ideal candidate.
