Job description
The HIV Cure Research Center (HCRC), headed by prof. Linos Vandekerckhove (PI) and prof. Sarah Gerlo (co-PI), is dedicated to multifaceted research with the ultimate objective of achieving an HIV cure. Research activities at HCRC are profoundly translational, characterized by the fusion of studies conducted on samples derived from individuals living with HIV, complemented by in vitro and in vivo validation in experimental model systems. Our endeavours encompass three pivotal domains: 1) fundamental research into the establishment and perpetuation of HIV reservoirs, 2) refinement and creation of novel assays for HIV reservoir monitoring in patients, and 3) the development of innovative strategies for eradicating HIV reservoirs. In addition, we aim to take our innovations to the clinical stage, conducting trials that push the boundaries of HIV cure research.
The proposed PhD project centers on the generation of camelid nanobodies engineered to target the HIV Env viral glycoprotein. The performance evaluation of these nanobodies will be carried out both in vitro and in vivo, utilizing models of HIV infection. The ultimate goal of the project is to develop a novel nanobody-based toolbox with applications both in HIV diagnostics and curative strategies.
We offer a full-time position as a doctoral fellow, consisting of an initial period of 12 months, which - after a positive evaluation, will be extended to a total maximum of 48 months.

- A strong interest in recombinant DNA technology, immunology and virology is warranted. Previous expertise in these areas of research is an asset.
- Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
- Candidates should have well-developed social skills and be able to work in a team.
