The research group of Tom Taghon (https://www.taghonlab.ugent.be ), located in Ghent, Belgium, is looking for a talented and highly motivated PhD student to join our team. Research in our lab is focused on the functional characterization of the molecular mechanisms that control major developmental stages of T cell development in human. We aim to better understand how functional T cells are generated so that this can be exploited to understand mechanisms of disease (such as immune deficiencies and T-ALL) and to improve current strategies for designing cell therapy approaches (such as CAR T-cells).
Using human primary hematopoietic stem cells and thymocytes, successful candidates will apply state-of-the-art molecular and cell culture approaches to improve our understanding on how human αβ and γδ T cells are generated. The work builds further on recent papers from the lab (Park et al., Science 2020; Lavaert et al., Immunity 2020; Roels et al., Nature Immunology 2020) and incorporates techniques such as single cell RNAseq, CITEseq and ATACseq; ChIPseq and CUT&TAG, in vitro cell cultures and organoids for hematopoietic stem cell differentiation (Dolens and Taghon, Nature Methods 2017) and retro- and lentiviral perturbation experiments for gain- and loss-of-function studies (including CRISPR/Cas9). You will work together with an international group of postdocs, PhD students and technicians in a new research building on the Ghent University Hospital campus that houses leading research groups in the field of Immunology and Genetics, thereby providing a state-of-the-art and stimulating research environment.
Profile of the candidate
- You have strong enthusiasm for scientific research with an interest in molecular genetics, blood cell development and/or immunology. Experience and/or strong interest in bio-informatics is a plus.
- You are a highly motivated and flexible team player with the capacity to work independently.
- You are creative, critical and have great problem-solving skills.
- You have strong research and presentation skills, illustrated by your master thesis.
- Candidates should have a relevant master degree in biotechnology, biochemistry, (bio)medical sciences, bio-informatics, bio-engineer, or equivalent.
