Job description
On September 1th 2021, CROPDIVA (Climate Resilient Orphan croPs for increased DIverisity in Agriculture), an EU funded research project with 27 partners in 11 countries will start for a period of 4 years.
CROPDIVA will focus on agrobiodiversity as crucial factor for ecologically and economically sustainable agricultural and food systems. However, agrobiodiversity is a complex concept that can be defined as a vital subset of biodiversity that is the result of the interaction between the environment, genetic resources and management systems used by culturally diverse people. Therefore, CROPDIVA will reinforce agrobiodiversity in European agricultural cropping systems on different levels and along distinct geographic and socio-economic areas resulting in resilient food and feed production systems that deliver safe and healthy food and feed products as well as innovative non-food products for European consumers.
To realise the project objectives CROPDIVA will focus on (1) the cultivation and breeding of six underutilised crops: oats, triticale, hull-less barley, narrow-leafed lupin, buckwheat and faba bean in various cropping systems and (2) on the creation of new value chains based on these selected underutilised crops.
More information on the project you can find on the link: https://www.ugent.be/en/research/research-ugent/eu-trackrecord/h2020/col...
In relation to the breeding and crop husbandry part of the project the department plants and crops of the faculty of Bioscience Engineering, UGent has a vacancy for a PhD student that will do research on intercropping between legumes and cereals: perspectives for breeding and crop husbandry.
