PhD position H2020 project VIPCOAT

Updated: 2 months ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 23 Dec 2020

We are looking for a PhD candidate in the frame of the Horizon 2020 VIPCOAT. The goal of VIPCAOT (Virtual Open Innovation Platform for Active Protective Coatings Guided by Modelling and Optimization) is to establish an Open Innovation Platform for the development of inhibition, active protective coatings and corresponding accelerated tests for assessing their in-service durability.

Your task within the project will be to investigate the leaching of inhibiting components and their impact on the electrochemistry in a defect in both bulk and dynamic electrolyte conditions. You will use experimental data (from literature and data sourced within the project), modelling input (DFT, AI) from the other partners within the project to develop and improve physics-based finite element models.

You will work in close contact with other partners of the project, both from industry (producers and users of coatings) and from research centers, with diverse backgrounds: software development, electrochemistry research (experimental and modelling), artificial intelligence, ... enabling the PhD candidate to also develop his/her interdisciplinary skills.

The research will be performed at SURF research group at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium. SURF has a long and fruitful tradition of combining both modelling and experimental approaches in electrochemistry. By combining both fields, advances in fundamental and applicable knowledge are gained which would otherwise be impossible.
