Context – This PhD thesis will be performed in close collaboration with the laboratories of Prof. Berionni and Prof. Robiette (2 other PhD students recruited in parallel). The biological applications will be realized either in the Biology Department of UNamur or in the Rega Institute (KULeuven, internationally renowned in virology and for the development of antiviral drugs, https://rega.kuleuven.be/ ).

Project – The CBO laboratory has a long experience in the chemistry of exo-glycals (enol ethers derived from carbohydrates) either for the design of enzyme inhibitors (Chem. Eur. J. 2016, 22, 15913) or for the development of novel synthetic methodologies (for instance the photoredox trifluoromethylation of exo-glycals Org. Lett. 2018, 20, 6769). The first part of the PhD thesis will be dedicated to the development of new reactions using exo-glycals, in particular using organoboron chemistry (expertise of the Berionni lab). The reaction mechanisms will be studied in close collaboration with the Robiette laboratory. The second part of the PhD thesis will be dedicated to apply the new reactions to the synthesis of viral enzymes’ inhibitors (collaboration with the Rega Institute, KULeuven) or as glycomimetics.

PhD duration: 4 years (starting in sept-october 2021)
