Ph.D. position – High-throughput in silico design and experimental characterization of membrane proteins
About the Lab
The laboratory of computational protein design, headed by Dr. Anastassia Vorobieva, offers a multidisciplinary environment at the cross-road between in silico protein design, biochemistry and structural biology. Our laboratory is located within the VUB-VIB Center of Structural Biology, which offers an international and stimulating research environment with access to state-of-the-art structural biology infrastructures. Our research group is a member of the international consortium of Rosetta software developers (RosettaCommons .org), which provides exciting international networking opportunities and support to new trainees.
We are looking for a highly motivated student to work on the de novo design of membrane proteins and the development of new high-throughput screening assays in picodroplets and FACS. The project heavily relies on Next Generation Sequencing, data science and structural bioinformatics. You will be involved in computational and experimental work.
We encourage highly enthusiastic, resourceful and creative individuals to apply. The candidate should have a strong interest in molecular modelling, protein engineering and high-throughput screening technologies.
- Master degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Structural Biology, Bio-engineering or equivalent;
- Excellent level of spoken and written English;
- Basic molecular biology techniques (cloning, libraries constructions);
- Basic protein biochemistry (protein purification, tryptophan fluorescence, …);
- Experience with cell-sorting technologies (FACS or microfluidics).
Desirable but not required
A background in any (or several) of these areas will be considered as an advantage: membrane protein biochemistry, coding (Python), High-Performance Computing, protein modelling with Rosetta.
Key personal characteristics
You should work well in a team to collaborate with national and international partners. You should be willing to acquire computational skills and molecular modelling competencies and be an assertive learner.
