The Center for Medical Genetics Antwerp is a diagnostic and research institute within the University of Antwerp and the Antwerp University Hospital, comprising over 100 scientists, of which over 40 are fulltime engaged in research.  The Center is looking for:

PhD student in molecular cancer biology

Job Profile

You will perform research on drug resistance mechanisms in the context of lung cancer. You will apply state-of-the-art genome editing techniques to generate drug-resistant cell-models for ROS1-driven NSCLC, followed by extensive genomic and functional characterization. With the end goal of expanding therapeutic options in this rare molecular subtype of lung cancer, you will evaluate the efficacy of available and experimental drugs against the generated models. You will work in an international network consisting of both academic partners and ROS1-NSCLC patient organizations.

Requirements

You should have a MSc degree in medicine, biomedical sciences, biochemistry, or a closely related discipline. A general background in human genetics and cancer biology is needed. A specific interest and/or background in bioinformatics is an extra advantage. You are willing and eligible to apply for a personal PhD fellowship with the Flemish FWO (FWO.be). Therefore, it is required that you hold a master degree from a European university, and have not obtained your master diploma more than three years ago (see FWO website for detailed conditions).

Proficiency in English, and good communication skills, both oral and written, are required. You are highly motivated, and you like to work in an interactive research team. You are willing to work on a 4-year PhD project starting as soon as possible.

What we offer

We offer a one year position, as a PhD student, which can be extended up to 4 year upon positive evaluation, even if a personal fellowship application is not successful. Wages are according to the standard Flemish bursary levels for PhD students.

You will join an enthusiastic research team, within an established and extensive international research network. In your daily work, you will work in close collaboration with experienced researchers at the Center for Medical Genetics of the University of Antwerp.  Besides that, you will also work in collaboration with several laboratory-oriented researchers and clinicians in cancer genetics.
