University of Antwerp – imec IDLab research group
The Internet & Data Lab (IDLab) is an imec research group at the University of Antwerp and Ghent University. IDLab focuses its research on internet technologies and data science. IDLab is a joint research initiative between Ghent University and the University of Antwerp. Bringing together 300 internet experts, we develop technologies outperforming current solutions for communication subsystems, high speed and low power networking, distributed computing and multimedia processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence and web semantics. Within Antwerp, where you will work, the overall IDLab research areas are machine learning and wireless networking. IDLab has a unique research infrastructure used in numerous national and international collaborations.
We are searching for a PhD student working on Performance Modeling and Optimization of Future Wi-Fi Networks for Real-Time Low Latency Applications.
Research topic
This position is related to the collaborative research project titled “Verifiable, Low-Latency Audio Communication Across Mixed Wired/Wireless networks”. The overall objective of the project is to design and validate end-to-end, interoperable mechanisms for verifiable, low-latency audio communication across mixed wired/wireless networks using Wi-Fi 6, BLE and Ethernet technologies. To this end, the project will investigate novel features introduced by Wi-Fi 6 and beyond standards. The project team consists of the University of Antwerp (led by Prof. Jeroen Famaey) and Ghent University (led by Prof. Ingrid Moerman) and will collaboratively perform research on this topic. The selected candidate will study and model novel Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax), Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) and beyond MAC layer protocols by means of both mathematical modeling and simulation. You will also assist in validating these results using the openwifi hardware platform.
The job
- You will conduct high quality research, under the supervision of Prof. Jeroen Famaey on performance modeling and optimization of Wi-Fi for real-time low latency applications.
- You will closely collaborate with other researchers at the University of Antwerp and Ghent University working on the “Verifiable, Low-Latency Audio Communication Across Mixed Wired/Wireless networks” project.
- You will design and implement novel solutions, evaluating them using mathematical analysis andsimulation.
- You will write detailed technical evaluation reports on the developed solutions, implementation, and experiments, leading to publications in major conferences and journals in the field of wireless communications.
- You will assist in teaching lab sessions of relevant courses at bachelor or master level (at most 10% of your responsibilities).
Job requirements
- You have or will soon obtain a master’s degree in electronic/electrical/telecommunications engineering, computer science, or equivalent.
- You are familiar with wireless networks protocols, including but not limited to PHY and MAC layer of Wi-Fi. Good knowledge of novel mechanisms introduced in IEEE 802.11ax and 802.11be is a plus.
- You have strong programming skills in C/C++. Knowledge of Python and/or Matlab, as well as NS-3 experience is a plus.
- You are a team player and have strong communication skills.
- You have a high proficiency in oral and written English.
Our offer
- A full-time paid PhD position for 1 year, extended up to 4 years after positive evaluation.
- An inspiring work environment, at the innovation hub The Beacon in Antwerp.
