Offer Description

PhD position: Virtual sensing and real time monitoring of the remaining useful life of an electronic system based on the digtial twin concepts

Dr. Bart Vandevelde from VZW Interuniversitair Micro-Electronica Centrum (IMEC) in Leuven, Belgium, Dr. Onur Atak and Dr. Gwendal Jouan from Siemens Industry Software NV in Leuven, Belgium are looking for a PhD candidate to join a three-year research training within the EU-funded MCSA industrial doctorate MIRELAI. You will be enrolled in the PhD programme of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and supervised by Dr. Bart Vandevelde (IMEC) and Prof. Dirk Vandepitte (KU Leuven).

Project Description

As a doctoral candidate within the MIRELAI project, you will be at the forefront of developing innovative virtual sensing methodologies for electronic systems. Your work will be focused on harnessing the power of the digital twin concept to predict the remaining useful life (RUL) of these systems with enchanced accuracy. To achieve this ambitious goal, you will be tasked with developing a state-of-the-art numerical modelling approach that takes into account all relevant thermal and mechanical phenomena. This approach will be validated against experimental data to ensure its efficacy. The end objective is to have the digital twin model running in real-time, embedded within the system itself, therefore particular attention will be paid to the computational cost of the model; where reduced order modelling techniques combined with Kalman Filtering methods will be considered.

International mobility

As a PhD candidate, you will be employed for 18 months each by Siemens and IMEC. During the placement at IMEC, you will also undertake a 1-month placement at University of Greenwich, supervised by Prof. Christopher Bailey.

Requirements

Specific Eligibility Criteria on the Horizon Europe: Marie Skłodowska-Curie (MSCA) programme apply, including the mobility rule and PhD rules. Applicants of any nationality are welcome.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Strong background in numerical methods, modelling, and simulation.
  • Experience with programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, or C++.
  • Familiarity with electronic systems, thermal and mechanical aspects, and digital twin technology.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong motivation to conduct research and publish results in high-quality scientific journals.
  • Fluency in English (both written and spoken).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with reduced order modelling techniques and Kalman Filtering methods.
  • Familiarity with real-time embedded systems.
  • Experience with experimental work and data analysis.
  • Publications in relevant scientific journals or conferences.

Monthly support and benefits

  • The successful candidate will benefit from an innovation-driven industrial environment
  • Personalized career development plans will be established to support the needs of the PhD candidate

The Phd candidate will receive an attractive salary in accordance with the MSCA regulations. The financial package will include: 1) Living allowance of €3,450 (country correction coefficient applies) (Includes salary, employers cost and different benefits), 2) Mobility allowance of €600, 3) Family allowance (€660), if applicable. The exact (net) salary will be confirmed upon appointment and is dependent on local tax, social and health insurance regulations, and the country correction factor.
