The Center for Radiopharmaceuticals Antwerp  (CREANT), part of Molecular Imaging and Radiology (MIRA) of the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, is looking for a full-time (100%)

Doctoral scholarship holder in the field of radiotheranostics for personalized cancer treatment.

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation of a PhD thesis in the field of Radiopharmaceutical Sciences.
  • This interdisciplinary doctoral position is jointly hosted by the Radiopharmacy (CREANT) and Medicinal Chemistry (UAMC) groups at the University of Antwerp. The Radiopharmacy group has expertise in developing molecules labelled with radioactive isotopes, and using them in molecular imaging (PET, SPECT) and/or radiotherapeutic applications. The Medicinal Chemistry group (UAMC ) has expertise in bioactive compound discovery and optimization, among others in protease inhibitors and derived tool compounds.
  • This position will involve the design, (radio-) synthesis and characterization of novel fibroblast activation protein (FAP) radiotracers/theranostics for PET imaging and radionuclide therapy.
  • You will perform analytical, biochemical and in vitro and in vivo biological investigations on the compounds.
  • You will write scientific reports, present findings at (inter-) national meetings, and publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the research group.

Profile

  • You hold a master’s degree or equivalent in the field of (Bio-) Chemistry, (Bio-) Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or equivalent through experience. Or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
  • You have a solid knowledge of organic chemistry.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • You have excellent writing and communication skills; excellent command of written and spoken English is mandatory.
  • Experience in radiochemistry in considered a plus.
  • You are willing to apply for additional personal PhD grants (e.g., FWO).
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision .
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies .
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is December 1, 2022 (or as soon as possible after that date).
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts  for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do your work between the Laboratories of Radiopharmacy and Medicinal Chemistry at campus Drie Eiken of the University of Antwerp in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
