In the context of a joint research project between the University of Antwerp and the University of Hasselt (School of Social Sciences), the Department of Management in the Faculty of Business and Economics is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of public management.

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of public management and on the following topic:

“The rise of social media, fake news and government distrust have led to an increasingly hostile environment for many public sector organizations, leaving them struggling with their reputation. In order to explain negative reputations, scholars assume that more bureaucratic organizations are more likely to face negative reputations. However, evidence for this claim is non-existent. Furthermore, there are theoretical indications that negative reputations may paradoxically lead to more bureaucracy. Through a multi-method design, the aim of this project is threefold: first, examining the causal effect of bureaucraticness on the reputation of public sector organizations; second, examining the causal effect of negative reputations on bureaucraticness; and third, analyzing the causal mechanisms underlying these effects.”

  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Department of Management.

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in a relevant field (holders of diploma’s in applied economics, public management, (organizational- or industrial) psychology, organizational sociology, organizational science or management science are particularly encouraged to apply).
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results (at least distinction).
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision .
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies .
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You have an excellent knowledge of Dutch (both written and spoken) and a good knowledge of English.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of one year. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another three years (total term of appointment of max. 4 years).
  • The planned start date is 1 October 2023 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts  for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
