The Department of Linguistics in the Faculty of Arts is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of linguistics / phonetics

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation of a PhD thesis on the phonetics of spoken language in children. The project aims to carry out a detailed investigation of intrinsic vowel F0 (IF0) in the speech development of children and in children differing in hearing status. The investigation of IF0 in these different groups of children will enable the project a.o. to collect crucial evidence as to the underlying causes of IF0 in order to provide a more fundamental understanding of the human speech production process, particularly with respect to how low-level phonetic cues may be used by speakers to enhance distinctions between phonological categories in order to generate robust speech signals for the purpose of communication.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the CLiPS research group.

Profile

  • You hold a first class Masters degree in linguistics, phonetics, speech and hearing sciences, psychology, or another relevant field, or you will have obtained one by the time you start work.
  • You have experience with acoustic analysis by means of software such as PRAAT.
  • You have excellent knowledge of statistics and have experience with data processing by means of packages such as R or JMP.
  • You have experience with data processing by means of Python.
  • You are fluent in English; command of Dutch is an asset.
  • Your teaching competencies are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision .
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies .
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. The scholarship can be renewed for another two years after positive evaluation.
  • The planned start date is October 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.
  • Your monthly stipend is in agreement with the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will be based at our City Centre University Campus and work in a dynamic and stimulating environment.
