The Department of Biology in the Faculty of Sciences is looking for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in the field of immunopeptidomics

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis. The PhD project makes part of an inter-University research project: the iBOF consortium "MIMICRY - Microbiome & Immune Modulation for effective CRC immunotherapy". During your PhD project you will research antigens presented by the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in colorectal tumors. These tumors are often nonresponsive to immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy (a subtype of immunotherapy which is effective for the treatment of many other types of cancer). In this project the immunosuppressive mechanisms in these tumors will be investigated to decipher the mechanism of the observed immunotolerance. The MHC complexes from colorectal tumors (from patients and from mouse models) will be purified to isolate and identify the presented peptides (antigens) by mass spectrometry. For the identified peptides the binding with T cell receptor binding partners will be analyzed.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Centre for Proteomics and the Biology department.

  • You hold a Master degree in the Biomedical Sciences, Biology or Biochemistry or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results and are motivated to write a grant to obtain a PhD fellowship.
  • You are good in bench work and want to gain knowledge and expertise in proteomics and mass spectrometry
  • You are goal oriented and you can work independently
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision .
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies .
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You are interested in biology, biochemistry, immunology, cancer research as well as bio-informatics.
  • You have a hands-on mentality and like lab work.
  • You have knowledge of protein biochemistry.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is negotiable.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for contract research staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will do most of your work at the Centre for Proteomics at the Groenenborger Campus in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
