The Department of Family Medicine and Population Health (FAMPOP) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of Health Economics.

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis on the cost-effectiveness of intervention strategies in the context of respiratory pathogens with pandemic potential. This PhD project is embedded in the ACCELERATE  project focusing on mathematical models that accommodate heterogeneity and randomness at the individual level. Your PhD targets the development and application of coarse-grained cost-effectiveness analyses through individual-based modelling. You will be challenged by a cascade of (parameter) uncertainties and stochasticity in the underlying disease process. Different health-economic perspectives will be adopted (patient, public healthcare payer, societal) in the interdisciplinary field of public health.
  • You will closely collaborate with other researchers with complementary skills at the University of Antwerp, UHasselt and the Vrije Universteit Brussel.
  • You will contribute to a public health framework grounded in advanced statistics, health economics and computer sciences to accelerate decision making for a next pandemic
  • You will report study results in writing and orally in the national and international scientific community.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks.

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in September 2023 in (Commercial) Engineering or Economic Sciences (e.g. Applied or Health Economics).
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • You have a thorough knowledge of R, Matlab or Python, or you are interested in learning scientific programming.
  • You have good communication skills, and you have an open mindset to engage in collaborative and interdisciplinary research.
  • You have thorough knowledge of English, both oral and written.
  • Experience with scientific writing is an asset.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision .
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies .
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is the 18th  of September 2023.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts  for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work on Campus Drie Eiken in a dynamic and stimulating working environment within the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health (FAMPOP) and the Centre for Health Economics Research and Modelling Infectious Diseases (CHERMID).
  • We accommodate open discussions with members of the ACCELERATE project based at the University of Hasselt and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
