The Department of Electromechanics in the Faculty of Applied Engineering is looking for a doctoral scholarship holder in the field of 3D-sensing.

Topic

Identification of biomedical parameters often occurs by using 3D vision technology (RGB, time-of-flight, thermography, CT scanning, hyperspectral imaging). The goal of the proposed research topic is the development and optimization of mathematical and machine learning models (Gaussian processes, neural networks, Bayesian statistics, …). The designed models will be validated by the accuracy standards as required by sensor-supported biomedical applications.

Position

  • You work actively on the preparation and defense of a PhD thesis.
  • You will acquire and apply classical and new mathematical techniques.
  • You create test environments for simulations and real experiments.
  • You publish scientific articles related to the research project, and present them on international conferences.
  • You carry out a limited number of teaching tasks at the Faculty of Applied Engineering or will assist in the guidance of Bachelor or Master theses.
  • Your research will be embedded in the activities of the research group InViLab (https://www.invilab.be/ ) , including the possibility to carry out research support tasks.

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in Physics/Mathematics/Computer Science/Engineering or Applied Sciences or you will have obtained it by the time you start to work.
  • Your study results demonstrate your talent for research/mathematics/science.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision .
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies .
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • Your experience in numerical modelling and simulation, in programming, or in setting up experiments is considered as an advantage.

 What do we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is 1 March 2022, but can be negotiated within restricted limits.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for contract research staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will do most of your work at Campus Groenenborger (Groenenborgerlaan 171, 2020 Antwerpen), in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
