The Department of Training and Education Sciences in the Faculty of Social Sciences is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of education sciences.

The role of community-based educational spaces in tackling the ethnic gap in education: a qualitative evaluation research.


  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the broad field of education sciences. In this research project you study to what extent educational initiatives developed by ethno-cultural minorities (such as a Polish weekend school or a ‘home work class’), help tackle inequalities in public education. You will study how these initiatives, their broader vision on learning and their strategies, have an impact on various outcomes on the level of the student. You will do this by way of a qualitative, longitudinal and theory driven stakeholder evaluation research approach. Moreover, your doctoral research is part of a broader FWO-project wherein a postdoctoral researcher at the KULeuven will study the impact of these initiatives on student outcomes by way of survey research. Both of you will collaborate closely.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Department of Training and Education Sciences and the research group Edubron.


  • You hold a Master degree in Pedagogy, Education Sciences, Sociology, Anthropology or in the broader field of the Social Sciences or you will have obtained it by the time you start.
  • Students in the final year of their degree can also apply.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision .
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies .
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You have excellent speaking, reading and writing skills in both English and Dutch.
  • You have experience with qualitative field research and/or data-analysis.
  • Familiarity with the domain of diversity, identity and educational sociology or anthropology is an asset.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with languages and cultural backgrounds of ethnic minorities in Belgium is an asset.
  • Experience with qualitative data analysis software, such as NVivo, is an asset.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of a two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another two years.
  • The planned start date is 1 October 2021.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will do most of your work at Stadscampus (City Campus) in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
