The Faculty of Law is looking for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in the field of corporate governance.

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the context of a research project on “Short-termism in corporate governance: a continental European perspective”, which received funding from the Research Foundation Flanders.   • The PhD thesis will be supervised by prof. dr. Robby Houben (supervisor) and by Dr. Tom Vos (co-supervisor).
  • The research project is part of the research conducted by the Jean-Pierre Blumberg Chair , which conducts research in corporate governance. The Jean-Pierre Blumberg Chair is part of the Research Group Business & Law .
  • You will conduct legal, economic and empirical research relating to the research project. If you lack knowledge and skills in any of these fields, you will take courses during your PhD to learn more about these fields.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will participate in (international) conferences related to the research project and you are given the opportunity to conduct international research stays.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks (maximum 10% of your time) for the Jean-Pierre Blumberg Chair and the Research Group Business & Law, mainly in the fields of corporate law and corporate governance.

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in law, (business) economics or law & economics, or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision .
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies .
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You have a particular interest in scientific research in the field of corporate governance.
  • You have an interest in the economic analysis of law. Prior experience with law & economics is an asset, but it is not required. If you lack prior experience with law & economics, you will have to be willing to follow courses to enhance your knowledge and skills regarding law & economics.
  • You have an interest in empirical research. Prior experience with empirical research is an asset, but it is not required. In any case, you will have to be willing to follow additional courses to enhance your knowledge and skills regarding empirical research.
  • You speak excellent English. Knowledge of French and Dutch is an asset, as the research project aims to study corporate governance in Belgium and France, but it is not required.
  • You have an international mindset.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is 15 September 2023, but we can offer some flexibility if a candidate wants to start before or shortly after this date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts  for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for contract research staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will do most of your work at the City Campus in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
