3 PhD positions available @ VIB-VUB Center for Structural Biology

Updated: 6 months ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

2-3 PhD positions are available in the newly established Brunner lab at VIB-VUB Center for Structural Biology in Brussels, Belgium.

Our group is interested in eukaryotic lipid transporters that are involved in pathological conditions in membrane biology. Another research area are ion channels of the endomembrane system that are linked to neurodegenerative or neurological diseases. To advance our understanding in these fields we combine functional characterization with a structural description of the involved proteins using cryo-EM and X-ray crystallography.

The Brunner lab is currently looking for highly motivated and creative thinking individuals to join her group. A background and strong interest in structural biology and membrane protein biochemistry is required. Hands-on experience with protein purification and eukaryotic cell culture is an advantage but not absolutely necessary.

To develop into independent scientists with a critical mindset, PhD-students are encouraged to apply for an FWO-fellowship (call opening December 9th 2019, infosessions between December 10th to 16th, see fwo.be, deadline March 2nd 2020). Candidates will be supported for the funding application after choosing a research topic.

Start of the PhD would be the 1st of November 2020 (upon positive evaluation by FWO), however funding for an earlier start from March 2020 could be possible.

We offer

VIB is an excellence-based entrepreneurial institute that focuses on translating basic scientific results into pharmaceutical, agricultural and industrial applications. VIB Center for Structural Biology houses research groups with strong expertise in protein biochemistry, X-ray crystallography, NMR, biophysics, nanobody technology and electron microscopy.

You will have access to state-of-the-art research facilities such as the VIB-VUB facility for Bio Electron Cryogenic Microscopy equipped with a 300 kV JEOL cryoARM300 electron microscope and K3 detector as well as the VIB Nanobody Core.

PhD students will have access to an extensive scientific and transferable skills training programs available through our affiliated institutes.

How to apply?

Interested candidates are asked to apply online.  Special requirements: please include your CV, a letter stating your research interest and accomplishments as well as a letter of recommendation.
