GRAZ UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY SEEKS:

University Project Assistant/ PhD Position (m/f/d), Project: Thermodynamic consistent modelling of solvent absorption in polymer encapsulation (ModKap), 40 hours per week, available from December 2021, for 3 years, at the Institute of Chemical Engineering and Environmental Technology

Polymers play an important role in all facets of daily life. This way polymers are applied as drug delivery systems or as encapsulation of sensitive products as electronica. In both cases the absorption of solvent plays a decisive role. In recent years the research has focused on strong swelling polymer networks as hydrogels with an increasing vol-ume during swelling. On the other hand, hardly swelling networks were almost not considered. But the knowledge of fluid absorption is essential for the design of long living electronics in the sense of a circular economy.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The work will be realized in form of the project ModKap funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG). Hereby, the knowledge on the permeation of solvent in polymer encapsulations will be deepened. The following point will be analysed:

  • Establishment of a data bank on solvent absorption in different polymers
  • Development of a method to predict solvent absorption
  • Coupling of mass and heat transfer
  • Simulation of diffusion in electronica

The first point is mainly experimental driven; whereas is the experimental setup was mainly build in a previous work. The project focuses mainly on the simulation of the diffusion and how its influenced by process parameters. The simulation tool will developed in this project. Meaning model development and its simulation is important.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Completed Master's or diploma studies in process engineering, chemistry, physics, maths or similar
  • Very good programmer skills (C++) and math
  • English in written and oral manner
  • Willingness to learn German

WE OFFER

  • Interesting area of responsibility
  • Excellent work-life balance (flexible working schedule)
