Job profile:

PhD Position, Characterisation of Phytomyxea Host Interactions. 20h per week, once the PhD concept is approved 30h per week (salary and conditions see the portal of the University of Innsbruck) Requirements: Master degree in Microbiology, Molecular biology, Phytopathology or related discipline. Knowledge of standard microbiology, molecular biology and microscopic methods. Experience in working with host-parasite interactions specifically eukaryote pathogens (e.g. Phytomyxea, Oomycetes) is desirable. Command of the German language or willingness to acquire German in a reasonable time. Please include a written concept of the PhD project in your application documents (max. 5 pages). Topic: The successful candidate will work on understanding the interactions between phytomyxean parasites and their plant and algal hosts. Aim is to better understand the biology of phytomyxea and to elucidate traits that lead to growth and propagation of these parasites. The successful candiate will work on characterising the interaction between the brown algae Ectocarpus siliculosus and the phytomyxean parasite Maullinia ectocarpii. Focus will be processes linked to energy production and transfer between host and pahtogen and along short term (e.g. circadian) and long term (e.g. pathogen differentiation) gradients. This will be done through a combination of observational methods (microscopy, phenotying) and analysing existing and novel RNAseq datasets to identify relevant processes.
