Tandem PhD program 2 PhD positions in neural stem cell biology
Funded by a Tandem Doctoral Program between the University of Innsbruck, Austria and Eurac Research, Bolzano/Bozen, Italy.
Contribute with your creativity and passion to the research activities of an international team of scientists in a vibrant field of biomedicine.
We are looking for two highly motivated PhD students to work on projects related to understanding the underlying causes of neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders combining stem cell biology with genetics, molecular biology and cellular biology in a systems biology approach with potential clinical impact. You will have the unique possibility to develop an attractive and competitive research project on patient derived iPS cells, using cutting edge techniques such as CRISPR/CAS9 gene editing, organoid derivation along with functional and biochemical characterization of iPS-derived neurons, using confocal microscopy and electrophysiology. Be part of a project between two international research centers, using state-of-the-art powerful tools in many fields of biomedical science to build link between basic and systems biology, for greater disease understanding, drug discovery and potential clinical translation. Training in this tandem program is designed to enable young researchers to reach a level of excellence that will allow them to compete for the most attractive post-doc positions in academic and industrial environments. The collaborative PhD projects will be carried out at the University of Innsbruck and at the Institute for Biomedicine at Eurac Research in Bolzano. The PhD students will be affiliated with both institutions and are expected to alternate their presence between Bolzano and Innsbruck. The supervisory team will be composed of the University of Innsbruck and Eurac Research staff: Prof. Dr. Frank Edenhofer, Dr. Katharina Günther, Genomics, Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, University of Innsbruck; Dr. Corrado Corti, Translational Genomics (Eurac Research); Dr. Andrew Hicks, Vice-Head Institute for Biomedicine and Group Leader Translational Genomics (Eurac Research)
- Masters in biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, human medicine, biomedicine or related study
- Experience in these areas: mammalian cell culture, human iPSC culture, neural stem
cell differentiation, CRISPR/Cas9-editing in human cells.
- state-of-the art facilities and resources at the University of Innsbruck and Eurac Research
- individual supervision and monitoring (students will have personalized thesis steering committee)
- a highly structured educational program and personal and career development
- In this position you are expected to write a dissertation in a stimulating environment using the university's infrastructure. You will hold your own lectures, tutor students and participate in administration. 50% of the working time is reserved for the thesis.
We are looking forward to receiving your online application.
