The Institute of Experimental Physics at TU Graz has openings for

40 hours/week, starting presumably on September 1st, 2022, limited to 4 years

We seek motivated PhD candidates interested in experimental physics to join an international team of PhD students busy with extreme time-scale investigations of charge & spin dynamics propelled by ultrafast light-fields down to the attosecond regime.

The project expands on experimental concepts we have developed1,2 and seeks to increase our understanding of the fundamental concepts of charge migration and magnetism in molecular and nano-scale solids, with particular emphasis on the timescale of the initially coherent and non-dissipative light-matter interaction. Striving for full time-, energy- and momentum resolution in a state-of-the-art photoelectron microscope we seek to provide information about the coupling between charge re-distribution, spin and orbital angular momentum within magnetic multilayer structures as well as in multi-constituent magnetic alloys and aspire to identify pathways for the all-optical control of the electronic and magnetic properties of matter.

Can we make a solid more magnetic by light?

The project is embedded into a strong collaboration with theorists (S. Sharma, MBI Berlin/MPI Halle, K. Yabana, U Tsukuba) and experts on magnetic system manufacturing (M. Münzenberg, U Greifswald)


Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Student tutoring and teaching in the course of practical exercises
  • Time- and spacially resolved spectroscopy of bulk materials, data analysis
  • Photoelectron-/ion-spectroscopy
  • Nonlinear optics, vacuum technology

Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Completed degree (MSc) in physics
  • Experienced in student tutoring (in particular practical exercises)
  • Team player
  • Good language proficiency in German and English
  • Interest in academic research within international collaborations

We offer an annual gross salary based on full-time of at least € 42,820.40, overpayment possible depending on qualifications and experience.
