The Institute of Interdisciplinary Mountain Research (IGF ) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW ), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, engages in the basic and applied research on impacts of global change processes in mountain regions across the globe. The working groups at the IGF provide a broad spectrum of expertise on a wide range of topics, and together create an exciting atmosphere for interdisciplinary mountain research. The institute is now offering a
PhD Student Position (f*m)
Sediment Connectivity in the context of Multi-Hazard Risk Assessment
(part-time, 30h per week)
for an initial period of one year, with the possibility of an extension to up to 3,5 years in total. Starting date is to be arranged. The position is affiliated with the Working Group Coupled Human Landscape System: Risk & Resilience at the IGF, located in Innsbruck/Austria.
Your tasks:
- To work primarily on the understanding of the sediment and water connectivity in mountain catchments and the influence on multi-hazard events on different spatial and temporal scales.
- To evaluate existing methods related to sediment connectivity and to develop approaches addressing sediment connectivity in context for multi-hazard risk assessment.
- To contribute to the enhancement of the conceptual model for analysing coupled human-landscape systems in mountain areas (Hossain et al. 2020 ) by identifying crucial couplings and interactions on different spatial and temporal scales.
Your profile:
- Master degree in the fields of e.g. geography, geo-informatics, earth sciences or similar.
- Basic knowledge about fluvial geomorphology, sediment transport, and mountain hazards as well as hazard assessment.
- Familiarity or experience with geospatial analyses and modelling (e.g.; Matlab, Python, GIS etc…) as well as field measurements or mapping.
- Strategic and systemic thinking to develop advanced methods and models for multi-hazard risk assessment.
- Enthusiasm for independent work in an interdisciplinary research team.
Our offer:
Excellent opportunities to work in a lively research environment and collaborate with international experts in the fields related to the project. The PhD position will be supervised by Margreth Keiler (IGF/ÖAW and University Innsbruck). The IGF and University Innsbruck have a cooperation and thus the PhD candidate will be part of the PhD program Geography at the University Innsbruck and the Innsbruck Doctoral College "Natural Hazards in Mountain Regions" with additional university training and education activities.
