Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 04 Feb 2022

Job ID: ESI004DOC222

The Erich Schmid Institute of Materials Science (ESI ) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW ), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is offering a

PhD Student Position (f*m)

(full-time, 40 hours per week)

in the project “Self-lubricating nanoscaled metal matrix composites for high temperature applications” for a fixed term appointment until March 31, 2025 (project end date).

Friction and wear are ubiquitous phenomena in mechanical components subjected to relative motion. This project aims at providing a first integral and thorough analysis of self-lubricating composites by combining an innovative manufacturing technology (high pressure torsion) and advanced microstructural and chemical characterization techniques.

Your tasks

The successful candidate will be part of a team whose research activities focus on the synthesis of bulk nanostructured materials by severe plastic deformation (SPD). The focus of the work will be on the synthesis of self-lubricating composites in combination with an in-depth microstructural characterization. You will have the opportunity to enhance your scientific career, including participation in international conferences and dissemination of results in scientific journals.

Your profile

  • Completed master study in Materials Sciences, Physics or equivalent.
  • Background in SPD methods and sample fabrication, microstructural characterization (SEM, XRD) and measurement of mechanical properties.
  • We are seeking independent, responsible and team-oriented candidates.
  • Excellent communication skills in spoken and written German and English are mandatory.

Our offer

We offer an international, ambitious environment for basic research-oriented candidates who want to perform cutting-edge research with access to world-class synthesis and characterization facilities. We have a friendly and dynamic research environment and strong collaborations with many international academic partners.

We offer an annual gross salary of € 41.768,53 according to the scale of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW). The appointment could begin as early as April 01, 2022.

Please send your application including a CV, a sample of scientific work and degree certificates and transcripts (including grade scale) via email to: [email protected] , mentioning Job ID: ESI004DOC222, no later than February 04, 2022.

Evaluation of candidates will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Please note that only complete applications will be processed.

The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) pursues a non-discriminatory employment policy and values equal opportunities, as well as diversity. Individuals from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
