The Acoustics Research Institute (ARI ) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW ), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is offering a

PhD Student Position (f*m)

(part-time / 30h per week)

ARI is an interdisciplinary research institution of Austria’s leading non-university research facility. It undertakes top-level research in psychoacoustics and experimental audiology, acoustic phonetics, musicology and bioacoustics, physical and computational acoustics, and mathematics and signal processing. The close interaction of the working groups allows innovative research approaches through the synergistic effects of multidisciplinary research. ARI employs ~40 academic, technical and administrative staff. The position is assigned to the Acoustic Phonetics group in Vienna.

The successful candidate will work within the project “Vowel and consonant quantity in Southern German varieties”funded by the FWF (Austrian Science Fund). The project is based at ARI in Vienna (PD Dr. Michael Pucher), at the IPS of LMU Munich (Dr. Felicitas Kleber), and at the Phonetic Laboratory of the University of Zurich (Prof. Dr. Stephan Schmid) and is funded by the FWF, the DFG, and the SNF.

The responsibilities of the candidate are:

  • Training of acoustic models for speech synthesis from the corpus collected in the project
  • Development of new models for the synthesis of varieties
  • Preparation of articles for national and international magazines
  • Development of perception experiments based on synthesized data
  • Presentations at national and international conferences

The candidate should be able to show:

  • Master degree in audio engineering, computer science, or electrical engineering
  • Programming knowledge in Bash, Python, R
  • Knowledge of parametric speech synthesis
  • Good knowledge of written and oral English
  • Level C in German or native German speaker

We offer a part-time position for 1.5 years. The desired starting date is October 1, 2020. The annual gross salary is € 30.878,40 (before taxes) according to the salary scheme of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF ).
