The Department of Biosciences of the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg is pleased to announce the following position, employment commence as soon as possible:

PhD student

Project description

The project aims to investigate immunological mechanisms involved in birch-pollen mediated allergic sensitization. The funding is for 3 years via the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

Tasks

  • Fractionation and characterization of pollen extracts
  • Isolation and culture of murine/human primary cells from blood (dendritic cells)
  • Stimulation of dendritic cells with pollen extracts, fractions of extracts and candidate compounds
  • Analysis of the cytokine- and chemokine profile and expression of surface markers (e.g. TLRs)
  • Analysis of active signal transduction pathways
  • In vivo polarization and sensitization models
  • Statistical evaluation of the results
  • Identification of cellular response patterns with multivariate statistical methods (PCA, t-SNE)
  • Comparison of results from human in vitro experiments with data from mouse experiments
  • Drafting of publication(s) and thesis

Your profile/qualifications

  • Master or diploma degree in life sciences (e.g. molecular biology, medical biology, biology, biochemistry, etc.)
  • Passion for science, intrinsic motivation, creativity and perseverance
  • Ability to work independently in a systematic and focused way
  • Basic knowledge in standard molecular biology, biochemical, and immunological methods (FACS, ELISA, Western Blot, qPCR)
  • Background or theoretical knowledge in immunology
  • Interest in immunology and bioinformatics
  • Good spoken and written English language skills

Of advantage, but not absolutely required

  • Knowledge and experience in cell culture
  • Experience in mouse models, evtl. FELASA certificate

Duration: 3 years; 30 h/week

The job location is at PLUS, Hellbrunnerstrasse 34, Salzburg, Austria.

The position is limited to 3 years.
